Pyromancy is, as opposed to Sorceries, more focused on AoE damage, good for regular PvE, and not so good for bosses. Keep in mind, though, that upgrading this weapon/tool is very expensive: fully upgrading the pyromancy flame has a soul cost equivalent to 55 Soul Levels. There are 21 possible upgrades for the Pyro Flame, each one more powerful than the previous one. Instead, you must upgrade the casting tool, Pyromancy Flame, directly to increase its MagAdjust. Pyromancy is an useful skill because it doesn't scale with any stat. Attunement caps at 50, with 10 attunement slots.
Upgrading Att further is not recommended, because it's probably unnecesary and will keep you from upgrading other stats.
The usual tip for Attunement is getting it to 16 fast (which will grant you 4 attunement slots) and then upgrade it further on the game to 23, which will net you 6 attunement slots (5 between 19 and 22 Att).
Attunement is an essential stat if you're going to be a sorcerer, pyromancer or cleric.
